About the Artist

Brian Coleman graduated from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New Yori, in 1968 with a degree in industrial design. He began a design career in NYC where he was introduced to cold cathode and neon lighting, using it for some of his commercial interior designs. In 1972 Coleman started experimenting with neon glass blowing in San Francisco and in 1973 in NYC at Rudi Stern’s “Let there be Neon” studio, became an integral part of the 70’s re-emergence of neon and an early contributor to Rudi Stern’s Gallery in SOHO. Brian is highlighted in all three of Rudi Stern’s books. In 1976 Coleman received a National Endowment for the Arts grant for work in neon; in 1977 showed his work at the “Contemporary Art Glass Group” on Madison Ave in NYC; and in 1977 conducted a neon workshop at California College of Arts in Oakland. From 1980 on Brian’s Neon Studio was on the West Coast.
