Artist’s Statement

Kathy Aoki addresses gender and pop-culture issues through approachable visual formats with a twist of humor. Installations of her current body of work, collectively entitled ‘The Museum of Historical Makeovers,’ are presented in the context of an ersatz beauty history museum. The museum framework allows for a free hand to address today’s pop culture and gender values in a format that is inviting rather than confrontational. Past topics included Brazilian waxing, ubiquitous makeup landscapes, and Gwen Stefani. A humorous performance aspect as Curator has developed from the faux museum work.
