Artist’s Statement

After 30 years as a firefighter I retired and found myself casting about for something real to do. Always drawn to contemporary art, I began to experiment with materials I was familiar with—wood and paint—making sculpture, studio furniture and painting. Being largely self taught allows a certain freedom to explore the use of materials, but creates difficulty in discussing what I do in art-speak.

My work is nonobjective—a combination of shapes, marks, colors, textures and happy accidents. As a painter, I seldom know where a piece in progress may be going, but I generally know when I’ve gotten there. As a sculptor, my work feels more straightforward. I’m obsessed with both mediums and find myself in the studio faithfully each day. My passion for this work has grown steadily and I look forward to doing it for a long time to come.
