Artist’s Statement

I have a desire to make visible the invisible undercurrents of our lives. My imagery is inspired by the surrealism and poetic moments of living in our fast-paced, modern world. I am interested in how daily life in the 21st Century presents us with implausible experiences in such regularity that we no longer differentiate between what is natural and what is colored with artificiality, humor, and irony.

I create photographically illustrated books springing from my fascination with the book format, and a love of texture in art. My imagery is inspired by the surreal and poetic moments of living in our fast-paced, modern world. I’m interested in how daily life in the early 21st Century presents us with incredible experiences in such regularity that we no longer differentiate between what is natural and what is colored with implausibility, humor, and irony.

These hard cover books are hand bound with marbleized paper and portray silver gelatin photographs printed traditionally in a darkroom. Differences in color are achieved by brushing sepia toner by hand onto selected areas of the print. I like the idea of making art that contains some imagery which can be sensed but not seen. The underlying pages contain my photographs, snapshots, and work prints that gave their lives for the imagery visible in the open folio spread. These images lie hidden beneath the displayed open pages like history.

In this digital age of electronic prints and service bureaus, I savor the tactile pleasures of making art by hand; I believe that certain works of art created by a human touch can contain a resonance of that touch: a discernible aura.

Each book is archivally hand bound and printed in very limited editions. In fact, each is unique, due to the texture and handwork, no two books can ever be exactly alike.
